If you are looking for qualified employees – and in today’s market, who isn’t? – you probably have posted vacancies on one or more internet job boards. The digital age has made publicizing job openings to millions of potential employees as simple as filling out questionnaire and submitting it online. But with dozens of posting sites populating the web, how can you be sure you are reaching the people you want to apply?
Just like your industry, the job boards industry includes companies large and small, aimed at serving the general employment pool and specific target markets, and existing at a variety of price points.
Which brings us to an important question: why pay to list your openings when any number of sites will let you advertise positions for free? Free job sites are a perfectly sound option, but as with most service providers, the more you pay, the more tools you unlock. Some of these additional services are little more than bells and whistles, but some – such as applicant tracking and resume-matching – make recruiting, vetting, rating, and contacting desirable applicants faster and more productive. As a general rule, it may prove economical to pay for preferential placement on boards, to be featured in emails sent to compatible candidates, and expand your offer’s reach when the potential applicant pool is particularly shallow:
The job is limited by location, because of state licensing requirements or there is fierce competition for talent, such as computer programmers in Silicon Valley
The job is for senior executive, highly technical, holders of very specific qualifications such as a nursing or law degree
You need to fill multiple openings with the same job title and requirements. Most sites offer bulk pricing that makes posting multiple ads quite affordable. Paying a premium also keeps your posting at the top of the listings week after week.
So now that you have decided which type of site is best for you, here are my picks for which specific sites offer the best values:
BEST FREE SITE – Indeed. Indeed.com did not become the world’s largest job board by being mediocre. Though it offers multiple paid options, your free post should generate plenty of responses, as it will show up when candidates search by keywords you have included in your position description.
BEST GENERAL-INTEREST PAID SITE – Glass Door. Potential employees love glassdoor.com’s employer review service that posts current and former employees’ opinions of thousands of companies. This feature generates tremendous traffic. After a free 10-day trial, the cost is $199 to $249 per month for a single job slot (you can only post one job at a time); additional slots are $50 per month.
BEST SITE FOR TECHNICAL JOBS – Stack Overflow. Started as a “geek hangout,” where coders could share information about job-related issues, stackoverflow.com attracts top talents, many who aren’t actively seeking a job change and would not be caught dead on general-talent sites. The company is tight-lipped about pricing – you must schedule a call from a salesperson, but expect to pay about $400 and up for a 30-day listing.
BEST SITE FOR CONSTRUCTION JOBS – Construction Jobs. Specializing in skilled construction labor, estimators, project managers and engineers, constructionjobs.com includes applicant tracking, free posting updates, and status updates with every pricing plan. Basic plans are $8 per day or $180 per month.
BEST SITE FOR HEALTHCARE JOBS – Health eCareers. Attracting nurses and other healthcare professionals with a newsfeed and career advice, healthecareers.com is a goldmine of passive candidates. It is candidate-friendly, including a pay scale estimator based on job location, specialty, and experience.
RISING STAR – SKILLEDTRADES.COM. A one-stop location for the most in-demand construction trades, safety, supervisory, and oil and gas positions, skilledtrades.com is an up-and-comer in the niche job board arena. It’s free for now, until the secret gets out. Employers can post by job category and choose which city or cities to target.
